Jeff is back blogging and below is an excerpt, read the whole post here
“I’m currently interning at a branch of the Philadelphia Free Library. The position has been rewarding in ways I was expecting–building relationships with working librarians, reinforcing academic concepts through practical experience–but also in ways I hadn’t anticipated. I worked with a patron today who had never used a computer before. I got her started on an online typing class, set up an e-mail address, and showed her how to navigate the library’s online catalog. If information is a commodity, then people with limited computer literacy are living in information poverty. That’s why I bristle at this “Age of Google” nonsense–because it assumes that everyone is computer literate (they’re not), and that every information need can be met by punching in some keywords (they can’t). The other day at my branch I walked an older patron through the maze of the Social Security Administration’s Web site and helped her apply for benefits. There are some things a search engine cannot do.”
I am sure you can imagine that having both Bryce and Jeffrey home for Turkey will engender some great conversation.
Nice!
