First Friday Coffehouse December 2nd

Poets, musicians, elves, hobbits, Santa’s helpers, merry women and men.

The weather outside is delightful (warm anyway), and the fire is somewhat frightful (when it gets too close to the garments one is wearing), and since we have a place to go, come on down to the First Friday Coffeehouse this Friday, December 2. We have poet Ed Pacht returning to do some contemporary reflections and hopefully something to put us in the holiday spirit. We also have the trio Sylvan Roots performing and it’s quite possible we’ll spice the music selections up with a holiday tune or two. There is a rumor that a surprise group will be showing up to do some additional holiday festivity type tunes. So, stay tuned.

On another note, some of you have been waiting (perhaps losing sleep or not losing sleep) for the latest edition of The Lit Fuuse. Well, the volume is here and I’ll have copies for those that may have an interest in such things this Friday. The contributing authors are welcome to a complimentary copy.

About Ed Pacht:

We’re featuring a passionate poet, and steady patron of the First Friday Coffeehouse, Ed Pacht. Ed has an uncanny ability to write spontaneous poetry and capture a fellow performer “in the moment”, and then share it with the audience in the same evening. Ed is a minister, and a pacifist from the Rochester area. He recently offered new poems at a poetry event at the Exeter Town Hall for the first annual One Hundred Thousand Poets for Change. Ed shares his convictions to his grounded self in his poetry with flare, joy, intensity, and a deep love for life.

About Sylvan Roots:

The birth of Sylvan Roots was spawned by three guitarists that enjoy acoustic music. The style of each member of the band is varied and comes from a long performance and listening tradition. The music is driven by traditional folk, acoustic rock, protest-era songs of the 50’s and 60’s and also includes more contemporary sounds. The focus of Sylvan Roots music is the song. Some of our work is original but most of the music we do includes well-known and more obscure songs of the folk and blues tradition and includes influences as wide as Bill Staines, Woody Guthrie, Louis Armstrong, Nanci Griffith, Allison Krauss, Hank Williams, Greg Brown, and John Prine. Sylvan Roots is Neal Zweig, guitarist (accompaniment and solo work), Dick Kruppa, vocals, guitar, and banjo, and Bob Moore, vocals and guitar.

First Friday Coffeehouse Dec 3rd 2010

Musicians, guitarists, poets, thankful people, survivors of Black Friday

(the people on the cable reality show are wimps by comparison):

We have another great coffeehouse coming at you this Friday. We’re featuring a very accomplished fingerstyle guitarist, (originally from out West but landed in Exeter a few years back), Ryan Judd, who has come to the coffeehouse on many occasions to share his guitar technique, original compositions, and great arrangements of familiar and eclectic tunes.

Ryan is a music therapist and guitar teacher by day, and a composer, and performer by night. He has a great taste in music, and a wonderful enthusiasm for the music he does.

A little more about Ryan follows below.

There is a good chance we’ll also have a couple of guest poets come to do some poems in a kind of dramatic group presentation (we’ll keep it a surprise for now). So, come on down and we’ll do it up with the usual music, poetry, and other  artistic performers who come calling (when we least expect them, and their discovery is our gain).

Ryan Judd is an instrumental guitarist, specializing in contemporary finger style guitar. He has a CD called Fingerstyled that features his compositions. Ryan’s influences include guitarists such as Michael Hedges, Billy McLaughlin, and Andrew York. In addition to being a musician, Ryanis a Music Therapist specializing in working with children, adolescents, andadults with special needs. He is also a guitar teacher and has his ownteaching studio in Exeter.
