We lived in Newburyport for 6 years.
Right downtown on the river.
Great views.
Going back and forth to Plum Island you pass the pink house.
I never ” got it”.
I do know that many want their memories preserved.
Bryce took me fishing in the Berkshires and he hired a guide.
A young man about Bryce’s age. He told us of his plan to move North from Albany to his grandfathers lodge on the St Lawrence.
Gramps rents cottages and has been there forever.
This fellow will be taking over with his wife. She has found a teaching or nursing job up there.
He told us about one cabin that a family from Michigan had rented every Summer .
Forever.
As a surprise to their long term guests gramps did the cabin over one winter and it was nice.
No more moldy odor from the paperbacks on the small shelf near the lumpy sofa just outside a bedroom with a squeaky iron bed and yes a lumpy mattress.
All replaced .
New paint.
The Michigan family arrived and spilled out of their car.
It was the mother though that went straight to the cabin.
She had been coming since she was a child.
So excited she flung open the door and he said it was almost a scream.
Tears.
“What have you done to my cabin?”
She was lost.
Oh I get it.
Let it go.
