In an effort to increase awareness of the Squamscott River I have been speaking with Don Clement of our Conservation Committee. I thought a sign, or display at Stewart Park( Exeter Waterfront) would go a long way in educating the community about the river and its links. I have some ideas. Feel free to weigh in with yours! This river has been called the Exeter River in the press from time to time and many don’t even realize it’s tidal. The mistake that has been made forever is an assumption about the effects of tide at the headwater. That somehow this ebb and flow flushes the basin, it does not. The tidal bore really is dissipated a bit past Newfields landing. So , I would like to emphasize the Squamscotts connection with Great Bay. I think a display sign with perhaps an art carved(wood) sign based on an accurate map and also some link to the past. This could be some pictures of the ships that once plied the now silted waters, the wharfs , etc. a few bird identifications might be fun too. Does it have to be somehow protected to prevent “tagging” you tell me. This could be great and serve a significant purpose in staving off efforts to add to the “load” the river is carrying to Great Bay and beyond. I would contribute to the cost of this project.
Merry Christmas
